India represents an important S&T partner for Canada.  Although there is great difference in the size of our respective populations, there is much synergy in our potential to build productive partnerships.  Our nations share a commitment to democratic values, higher education and innovation and extensive opportunities for commerce and trade.

India and Canada have signed a bilateral science and technology (S&T) agreement to encourage, develop and facilitate cooperative activities between the two countries in science and technology (S&T) for peaceful purposes in fields of common interest and on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.  Within the context of this S&T agreement, ISTPCanada, the Department of Science and Technology (DST)/Global Innovation Technology Alliance (GITA) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), have established and implemented a world-class model of bilateral R&D collaboration. From 2007 to March 2012, this novel platform has enabled:

  • The funding of eight high quality bilateral R&D projects in priority industrial sectors such as Alternate Energy and Sustainable Environmental Technologies; Biotechnology, Health Research and Medical Devices; Earth Sciences and Disaster Management; Information and Communications Technologies (ICT); and Nanotechnology; these projects engage a total of more than 125 core participants from small- and medium-sized companies, multinationals, universities, and other centers of innovation; and
  • The conduct of 20 Partnership Development Activities that engaged more than 500 participants from industry, academia and government; these initiatives have led to more than 50 collaborations to date.
